Pediatric Pneumonia

What You Need to Know

Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs. It can be mild or serious. The illness can be caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Key Symptoms

Some common symptoms include: 

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Chest pain

Diagnosis

Your child's provider will complete a physical exam and may include these tests to confirm the diagnosis:

  • Chest X-ray
  • Blood tests
  • Sputum culture
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Chest CT scan
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Pleural fluid culture

Treatment

Treatment for pneumonia will vary depending on the severity and if your child has been hospitalized. Treatment could include: 

  • Plenty of rest
  • Increasing fluids
  • Cool mist humidifier
  • Acetaminophen for fever and discomfort
  • Medicine for cough

For sever cases, treatment could include:

  • Antibiotics by IV (intravenous) or by mouth (oral)
  • IV fluids
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Frequent suctioning of your child’s nose and mouth
  • Breathing treatments
