If your child has been diagnosed with a serious condition such as leukemia, lymphoma or another blood disorder, such as sickle cell disease or beta-thalassemia, a stem cell transplant may be an important part of their treatment plan.

Children's National Hospital is home to one of the region's only dedicated pediatric stem cell transplant programs. We care for more children than any other hospital in the Washington, D.C., area. Our Blood and Marrow Transplantation team is nationally-recognized for its leadership in advancing pediatric transplant care. The program is accredited by the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), ensuring the highest standards in transplant quality and safety.

CAR-T cell therapy: KYMRIAH® Treatment

Children's National Hospital offers KYMRIAH® (tisagenlecleucel), which is the first FDA approved CAR-T cell therapy for children and adults up to 25 years with acute B cell-lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) whose leukemia has come back or has failed to go into remission with standard treatment. If previous treatment methods were unable to keep your child's cancer in remission, KYMRIAH® may help your child beat cancer.

Glossary of Terms

Blood and marrow transplantation involves complex procedures and terminology. To support patient and caregiver understanding, we offer a comprehensive glossary that defines key clinical terms used throughout the transplant process.

How do we support your child after a transplant?

The weeks following a bone marrow transplant are a critical part of your child's recovery. At Children's National, we provide comprehensive, post-transplant care to support healing, prevent complications and promote long-term success. Post-transplant care includes:

  • Protecting your child against infection: Your child will stay in a private, high-efficiency particulate air- (HEPA) filtered isolation room. This environment provides the highest level of protection from infection during this vulnerable period.
  • Supporting the whole child: We care for more than just your child's medical needs. Our team offers emotional, social and developmental support, which is especially helpful for children who may find isolation challenging. Resources include bedside entertainment, spiritual care and help keeping up with school work.
  • Around-the-clock monitoring: Our experienced transplant nurses provide continuous care and closely monitor for signs of complications, such as infections or graft-versus-host-disease. Early detection allows for timely treatment and better outcomes.
  • Outpatient follow-up: After discharge, your child will continue to receive care in our dedicated bone marrow transplant outpatient clinic. This space is designed specifically for transplant patients and allows for close monitoring, lab work, infusions and follow-up visits in a safe and supportive environment.
