Choosing Children's National for Bariatric Surgery
Our Bariatric Surgery Program is one of the most experienced and comprehensive programs in the country, dedicated exclusively to helping children and teens achieve a healthier future. We provide personalized, compassionate care for children with severe obesity and work closely with our medical weight loss clinic to determine individualized management plans for each patient. Highlights of our program include:
- Unmatched experience. We have performed more than 850 adolescent bariatric surgeries, making us the largest pediatric program in the nation. Our surgeons are board-certified in both general surgery and pediatric surgery. The comprehensive care team includes pediatric surgeons, obesity medicine physicians, psychologists, dietitians, physical therapists and nurse coordinators. We work closely with each other and with your family to achieve the best possible outcome. Meet our team.
- Dedicated pediatric specialization. Unlike many programs designed for adults, our weight loss surgery team specializes exclusively in the care of children, adolescents and teenagers, tailoring every aspect of treatment to meet their unique medical, emotional and developmental needs.
- Proven safety and outcomes. We are proud of our excellent safety record and long-term outcomes. Surgery in adolescents, when done in a high-volume pediatric center like ours, has been shown to be safe and effective, with long-lasting health benefits.
- Level 1 Surgery Verification. We have attained Level 1 Surgery Verification from the American College of Surgeons, a distinction that recognizes surgery centers that have improved surgical quality, prevented complications, reduced costs and saved lives.
- Personalized care. Your child may have their own questions about bariatric surgery and their post-surgery bodies. Our team includes child psychologists who can talk to your child and address any questions or concerns they may have. In addition, we will develop a personalized lifestyle and follow-up plan for your child to adhere to both before and after weight-loss surgery.
- Purpose-driven mission. Our mission is to improve the health and quality of life of children and adolescents with severe obesity through safe, evidence-based surgical care, integrated medical support, and compassionate family-centered guidance.
What is a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive weight-loss surgery in which approximately 75–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a narrow, tube-shaped “sleeve.” The smaller stomach holds less food, helps patients feel full more quickly, and reduces hunger hormone production.
Is bariatric surgery right for my child?
Bariatric surgery can be a life-changing option for children and adolescents with severe obesity — but it’s not the first step for everyone. Our expert team takes a thoughtful, individualized approach to care, evaluating each patient’s physical health, emotional readiness and family support to determine whether surgery is the safest and most effective path forward.
We also offer early evaluations and second opinions, even if your child isn’t ready for surgery yet. Connecting with our team early can lay the groundwork for long-term success and help your child take meaningful steps toward a healthier future.
